Wet Felted Rug for Dr. Vandana Shiva

In 2019 Dr. Shiva was Sterling's commencement speaker. I was honored to lead a group of students and make a gift for someone I have always admired so much.

Below you can see some images from the process.  The imagery represents a connected web of community joining with the earth and sky, beginning of course with the seeds. We used wool from the farm, locally grown plant dyes (primarily right out of my garden-so good and local), and entirely human and draft animal power to make the felt.

Adding the final layers of wool before felting action begins
Making adjustments to the felt after the first stages of feltmaking with the horses.
